Arm Bar Defense by BJ Penn

E-mail Print PDF

Arm Bar Defense by BJ PennHere are the basics for an armbar defense:

1.Never pull out, because your arm will be extended.

2.Put your weight forward and pull your arm in.

From this position you can do couples of things:

1.You can grab his neck with your free arm. Step over with the right leg, if your right arm is trapped and pull your arm out.

2.Block his legs with your free arm behind his knees until you get your hand out.

Escaping the full mount by Lubomir Guedjev

E-mail Print PDF

Escaping the full mountIn Mixed Martial Arts very often we can be on our back, which is bad position for the fighter on the ground. The fighter on top has good position for striking. He has good distance and weight. And the fighter on the bottom has no distance or weight or swing.

The most important thing is to remain calm and undertake the right moves to get out of this bad position.

First basic thing is: When the fighter from the top want to strike he must be sitting down on your body. This is good position for striking, but also gives the opportunity to the defending fighter to brake the balance of the attacker when he swings. It is important when you lift the opponent your hip to stay up. Than push his leg with your arm and put your knee inside his. Then depending on how he is standing you can go for leg lock or do a sweep and go for better position.

If the opponent is in close distance trying to make choke or submission, it is important to choose one of his arms and block it. You can just embrace it and block his elbow. There are few variations, but the important is to isolate one of his arms. After you block one of his arms you must block the same leg with your leg. If you block his right arm you must block his right leg too to sweep him in that direction. But if you go directly to the side he can use his other arm to find his balance and stop you. So you must first lift him up and then to the side. After the sweep first thing is to close your position and protect your hands from locks and your head from strikes.

BJ Penn and Fedor Emelianenko Demonstrating the Rear Naked Choke in Sport Science

E-mail Print PDF

Rear Naked ChokeBJ Penn is one of the best submission artists in the UFC. If you wonder how to do re ar naked choke or what happen during rear naked choke - this is for you.

It only takes 5 LBS (5 pounds = 2,3 kilos) of force to choke someone out. That's less force than it take to brake an egg. But BJ can deliver 34 times more force than necessary - 163 lbs (74 kg.) And Fedor Emelianenko deliver 500 lbs (227 kg.) of force for 10 seconds. Thats like been squeezed by brown bear for 10 seconds. In MMA match the referee stops the bout the instance the fighter taps out or goes uncontentious. But if Fedor continue to choke with that force a real person, it could be deadly.

Although the brain is only 2% of the body's weight it utilizes 20% of the body's oxygen.

When the BJ Penn compress the carotid arteries of John Brenkus, the blood flow therefore the oxygen supply is reduced by 13% to his brain.

3 second in muscle activity increase double.

At 6 second John Brenkus vision starts to go. First color fades. Than black curtain closes in for his peripheral vision. This curtain is the last thing he will remember after the choke.

At 8 seconds interaction between 8,2 billions neurons in his frontal cortex has stopped. Halting his short term memory.

At 9 seconds he is out cold. His brain is in survival mode and powers down his entire body. His heart rate drops from 124 to 80. Respiratory rate drops by 55%. At this point electrical activity in his brain has been reduced by 65%.

After BJ Penn releases the choke, opponent's heart aggressively pumps to push oxygen rich blood back to his brain at 12 milliliters per second. And his brain reboots in only 3 seconds. And the only residual effect is the 5 seconds gap in his memory.

In the UFC 95% of the fighters tap out before loosing consciousness. And because of the rules in the octagon no one has ever been seriously injured because of a choke out.

BJ Penn: "I prefer to be choked out, than knocked out. No cuts. All your teeth are still in your mouth. You've got nothing to worry about.

Watch the video but remember - choking is dangerous, so don't do this at home. It's best left to the pro's.

Your oponent also stay low and tries to pass your guard.

You try to folow him with your arms, but your body stay until he is right in the north-south position.

When he is passing you must keep your legs crossed, because this is what is going to set it up.

When your legs are crossed move your right (or left) foot from his armpits to over his shoulder.

Escape form Alcatraz - Eddie Bravo

E-mail Print PDF

Full Mount EscapeEscape form Alcatraz - Eddie Bravo - Full Mount Escape

Flexibility and light dexterity is huge.

I’m in a mount.

The key position here is my elbow, checking his right leg (Eddie said “left leg”).

If his legs are high on me this is not going to work. I can’t hook any legs.

I need him down. I need to keep his hips down with my elbows.

I’m going to straighten up one leg – my left leg.

The leg that I am going to hook is the one I want down. I don’t care too much about his left leg.

I’m going to hook under his right ankle here. Lift his right leg and lock it with my left leg.

Double under-hooks.
